Blue Ridge Parkway, the most-visited national park, hugs the crest of the mountain.

New River, the second oldest river in the world and one of a few North American rivers that flow north. The New River Trail State Park follows an old railroad bed meandering through southwestern Virginia and parallels the scenic and historic New River for 39 miles.Hiking, biking, horseback riding and boating on or near the trail.

Mabry Mill, picturesque watermill located at milepost 176 of Blue Ridge Parkway, a short trail around the mill connects historical exhibits about life in rural Virginia, a gristmill, sawmill, and blacksmith shop.

 

Riverside Outfitters, Fries, 10 minutes, canoe and kayak rental and shuttle service, standard trips range from 4 to 8 miles.

Foster Falls Village dates back to the mid 1800's and features a railroad depot, hotel, saw/grist mill, iron furnace and other buildings, two canoe/small boat launches, picnic shelter and canoe/bicycle/inner tube rentals, horses, fishing from river bank or boats, swimming in river.

Blue Ridge Music Center An outdoor concert every Saturday night from late spring to early fall at Milepost 213 of the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Christmas in July, West Jefferson, second full weekend in July.

Château Morrisette Winery, Outdoor concerts held once a month, overlooks the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Claytor Lake, 4,500 acre, 21 miles long state park in the New RiverValley offers miles of hiking trails, swimming, fishing, boating, camping, cabins and a visitor center.

Early 1800 Historic Shot Tower, almost 200 years old, the tower was used to manufacture lead shot. Open weekends April-October.
